The Second Punic War (218-201 BC) almost led to the destruction of Rome when Hannibal boldly invaded Italy, gaining numerous victories. But Rome stubbornly resisted and Hannibal was gradually worn down. A relieving army led by his brother Hasdrubal was destroyed at Metaurus in 207 BC. The able Roman general, Scipio Africanus, then carried the war to Spain and North Africa, repeatedly defeating the Carthaginians. Hannibal returned to North Africa but was conclusively beaten by Scipio at Zama in 202 BC.
